Coast Guard deals with several incidents overnight

A Spanish fisherman had to be airlifted to safety after he experienced breathing problems while on a trawler.

THE IRISH COAST Guard had a very busy bank holiday Monday – but thankfully nobody was seriously injured in any of the incidents it dealt with.

Among the cases it dealt with was a Spanish fisherman with breathing difficulties who had to be taken from a trawler.

He was airlifted off a Spanish Trawler 250 km north west of Shannon and brought to Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick at 1.30am, said the Coast Guard.

RTÉ reports that Madrid’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre alerted the Irish Coast Guard to the incident.

In Sligo, Sligo Coast Guard helicopter helped at a road traffic accident in Drumshambo, by picking up one casualty and one advanced paramedic and airlifting them to Galway Hospital for 1am.

At Boyeeghter Bay, one adult and three children were cut off by the tide, so Mulroy Coast Guard boat was sent to the scene.

It found the adult and children stranded on a beach. The boat was unable to land due to the weather, but Mulroy Coast Guard Cliff Unit was able to bring all the casualties up the cliff and to safety.

An injured swimmer was found half-way up a cliff in Newtown Cove by Tramore lifeboat. They were taken by the lifeboat to the pier with a suspected break and mild hypothermia. They were assisted by Tramore Coast Guard cliff unit.

Clogherhead Coast Guard helped in the search for a missing 11 year old from the Clogherhead beach, but the child was later found by their family.
