Mug shots: 6 Insta-worthy alternatives to the classic coffee table design

Serve up some style with these top picks.

WHEN IT COMES to entertaining and relaxing in your living room, the right coffee table is essential. It’s more than just a handy spot to place books, laptops, snacks and drinks – although the correct height in relation to the settee is a must to ensure everything is within arm’s reach.

As well as that, coffee tables usually have such a central position in a space that a design you’re in love with will have a big impact.

This week, we’ve scoured Instagram for six very different, yet easy to incorporate coffee tables that will make themselves right at home in your lounge.

Golden age: Adding contrast when it comes to shape and finish will give a room depth and highlight all of your favourite furniture pieces. We love how @furniturebrandsint plays with a mix of interesting furniture legs in cast iron, wood and gold. This makes the coffee table pop, yet doesn’t mean the other pieces are left in the shadows. The cushioned top of this ottoman-style table adds softness to a space that could risk being too hard.

Add a touch of luxe with this art deco inspired Diamond table from Oliver Bonas.

Ace the space: Keep a room light by choosing far from heavy decor additions that aren’t blocky and allow the air to circulate. This wooden coffee table highlighted by @habitatgold creates just the right balance by incorporating sturdy materials into its lightweight frame.

For similar, look to this Julian Bowen Scala table from Littlewoods Ireland.

Button up: A decorative pouffe or ottoman that ties in the elements of the furniture that surrounds it can easily double up as a handy coffee table. By adding a tray like @mobelliliving shows here, the room maintains the plush theme while creating a makeshift table top when it comes to serving up some drinks. Create similar vibes with this tufted ottoman from Ubuy.ie.

Double take: Sometimes things work better in twos, as @ca_interiors_cpt proves with these lightweight and simple to incorporate tables. Perfect when paired together to create a symmetrical element to the sitting room, they can also hold their own if you’re short a side table. Copy the look with two Lois tables from Marks and Spencer.

Industrial idea: Contrasting different shapes that vary in height is a nod to the nest but with a twist. We love @thenewdesignproject ‘s industrial living room where the coffee tables, open brickwork and spool-style stools all contribute to the hardworking theme.                           You’ll find similar square and round tables at Amara and Woo Design.

Go long: Add interest with coffee tables that play with starkly different shades, shapes and styles yet are still a match made in heaven. We like how @villa_arton’s tables nestle comfortably in front of the sectional sofa and the mix of black and white adds even more to the intended monochrome space. Look to IKEA’s NYBODA tables that come in pairs and have reversible tops for when you fancy a change.
