Man arrested and suspected firearm seized after incident at Connolly Station in Dublin

Gardaí deployed a large scale response, including several Garda Armed Response Units.

LAST UPDATE | 14 hrs ago

A MAN HAS been arrested and a suspected firearm has been seized following an incident at Connolly Station in Dublin.

Rail services have resumed through Connolly Station after they were suspended earlier this evening while gardaí attended to the incident at the station.

Shortly after 6.20pm this evening, gardaí received a report of a male passenger onboard a commuter rail service arriving into Connolly Station that had been observed to be in possession of a suspected firearm.

The individual is not alleged to have made any threat towards any passenger onboard.

Gardaí deployed a large scale response, including several Garda Armed Response Units based in Dublin City.

A man in his 50s was arrested at the scene and is currently detained at a Garda Station in the Dublin Region.

The suspected firearm has been seized and a garda spokesperson said a full technical examination will be conducted to determine its status under Irish legislation.

Gardaí evacuated Connolly Station and conducted a security sweep of both the station and the train on which the person was a passenger.

A spokesperson said there are no ongoing public safety issues and the station has now reopened.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Store Garda Station on 01 666 8000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson said gardaí are “aware of commentary in circulation online in relation to this incident which contains misinformation, disinformation and fake news”.

“Once again, An Garda Síochána appeal to the public to independently verify any information that is shared on social media and/or sent through messaging sharing apps,” said the spokesperson.

There are still delays at Connolly Station following the incident, and Irish Rail said delays of up to 50 minutes can be expected.
