PUBLIC HEALTH OFFICIALS have confirmed 5,156 new cases of Covid-19 in Ireland this afternoon.
As of 8am today, 503 people are in hospital with Covid-19, including 110 who are in ICU.
Yesterday, 5,622 new cases were confirmed while 487 Covid-19 patients were in hospital, of whom 114 were in ICU.

Even Luke O Neil coming out now saying Omnicron so far nothing to worry about. Consistent with what SA Health Authorities have been saying from the start although interestingly not widely reported here. Instead utilized to justify even further restrictions. The game is up for NPHET/FFG. Their handling of the pandemic and the impact of their policies (or lack there of) on our society has been catastrophic.

@Toon Army: it will take 2-3 weeks to see the impact. Hopefully it is more transmissible and less virulent and we can let it rip. But until we know for sure, it’s better to be cautious
@Toon Army: I’ve seen the statements from the SA authorities reported upon consistently in MSM. Problem is many have become the victim of confirmation bias and only absorb information that accords with pre-held perceptions. Social media algorithms don’t help either

Memery: whilst it is true that reports from SA is that it Omicron has only caused mild symptoms in patients so far and it has been widely reported, they have also come with the caveat that these were in young healthy patients, and it is still unknown what the impact is on older people, or those with underlying health conditions. People pick and choose which piece of information to focus on, based on their own beliefs. We should know within 2-3 weeks, assuming the usual timeframe between cases and hospitalisations continues as before. In the interim, advice from most experts is that this *could* be great news, but until we know for sure, it is best to be cautious

@Toon Army: catastrophic? Highest vaccine rate in the EU and one of the lowest death rates. We currently have mild restrictions compared to most of the EU, certainly western Europe. What exactly has been catestrophic?
@Toon Army: (1) there is 2 week lag between increases in cases and the impact on hospitalisations and deaths (2) the exponential rise in South Africa is only in the last couple of days (3) it’s only been identified in other countries in the last couple of days (4) the average life expectancy in South Africa is 64, in Ireland it is 82; most cases in South Africa have been in the under 40s so we can’t yet know the impact in older populations (5) you can prevent spread by restrictions, you can’t undo the spread if you wait too long. I sincerely hope this variant signals the end of the pandemic. I truly hope it is more contagious but less virulent and we can let it rip. But it is too early to tell, so I am supportive of being cautious

One report said so far it is looking very good.
Our country’s handling of the pandemic has been internationally acclaimed as excellent. As at the start everybody made mistakes but we went early with lockdown and restrictions which saved a lot of people. Same with reopening.
As frustrating as all of it was, it did work.
We have been very cautious after the nursing home fiasco. They wont change now.

I have it, lots of symptoms, few antigen tests came out positive. Cannot get a PCR test, all booked out. I’m sure as hell not the only person in this situation. So I’d say the real number is far far higher than this.
@Rob Gale: Same with us few weeks back, husband had 2 positive antigen tests. Couldn’t get PCR test so just isolated and did our own antigen tests, only close contacts were household and work who already knew as he caught it off unvaccinated person in office.

Those who choose not to be vaccinated and are subsequently infected with Covid should be made pay for all their medical treatment. By their reluctance to take the jab, they are responsible for protracting the restrictions now in place and blocking urgent medical care for non Covid illnesses.
@Irish big fellow: Yeah, healthy Covid free unvaccinated are the problem. The vaccinated are spreading the virus, the vaccinated are getting sick, the vaccinated are in ICU and the vaccinated are dying, not just the unvaccinated, get off your high horse or your high stool.

Unfortunately for your beliefs it’s much easier to catch covid if you are unvaccinated and easier to pass it on. You also have much more of a chance of becoming seriously ill.

@Anto Gunning: the unvaccinated are taking up icu beds at a rate of approximately 11 for every 1 vaccinated person. The unvaccinated in the icu are also substantially younger than than vaccinated. All info from the HSE website. Get your vaccine or be rightly called out for not getting it.
@Nicole: smokers have to pay much higher premiums for health insurance, life insurance etc. Maybe that is the solution for the unvaccinated?
@Angela Lavin: I think the unvaccinated should avoid the vaccinated, as it’s the vaccinated that are in the Pubs, clubs going around thinking they’re immune and not a care in the world. While most of the unvaccinated are still behaving like we all did when there where no vaccines and we where all in this together.

As someone else here said, the cases are probably far higher but because people can’t get the proper test they’re going unreported.
