More lazee numbers rehashed by a lazee media. Businesses make decisions by comparing actual with projected and or with budgeted numbers. They are also separate the figures into classes, based on priority and relevance. We still dont know, as we go, how many get covid in hospital, how many die from it or die with it, the % of the death that is due to covid and not something else (old age, cancer, heart attack..), the degree of severity…. It is shocking that no one cares enough to give us their decision making info.
@Neil Neart: nobody dies from Covid they die from other issues brought on or exacerbated by Covid. You speak about actual and projection well the reality is over 5000 people have died from illnesses which may not have caused their death if they had not caught Covid, remember they were real people with real families.
@Neil Neart: I assume you have looked at the many many HSE reports on cases and ages and distribution and the only figures I do not see are the vaccinated versus unvaccinated cases. Admissions to hospital with covid are counted differently to acquiring the infection in hospital and these figures are published.
@Neil Neart: when you are in A&E and the doctors say that you would not survive sedation and intubation it really does not matter what the underlying condition is if covid put you in this position. In fact attempts to shove the blame away from covid is pat hetic. No one dies directly of AIDS, 50% of cancer patients do not die directly from their cancer, flu victims may die of pneumonia. Many diseases are related and it is a combination or consequence not an individual cause of death. Maybe get that medical degree and join the medical community and then speak with authority, but no hope as you cannot even use Google to find data that you claim in not published. Maybe stick to business models who care little for peoples lives and are based upon profits.
@Neil Neart: I don’t think the Journal is the place to find detailed in depth analysis. I suggest you try the Irish Times, Hse.ie, hpsc.ie, ECDC, seamus coffey (for rip.ie analysis) and the UK statistics website.
The Irish estimate I read recently, is that between 70 and 80% of the daily figure in 2020 were deaths directly caused by covid. It is much higher in the UK (for 87% with covid on death certificates, it was the primary cause).
The real time information is about individual people, so cannot be published unfiltered. The daily operational hospital data shows numbers by hospital (including those in ICU). I don’t think we can expect any more detail than that.
@Seán Ó Briain: yawn you say but what about the young and old who due to there illness can’t be vaccinated . 70 in ICU is no yawn to me . Pregnant women , blood cancer patients and the frail already among them . If not interested fine but yawn ?
@Sidney Cooper: Whatever the truth is I think it’s been well and truly flattened over the months in all media from the mainstream to the conspiracy websites. It most definitely has in the Journal’s comments section! I’ve honestly no idea what the truth is anymore in relation to Covid-19. The real truth will only come out when the books are written about this pandemic and mainstream investigative journalists rediscover what their job description entails. It should prove interesting and illuminating.
@Stephen Nix: if you have an elderly patient with issues and has covid and there is space in the icu don’t you think they will utilise the icu bed…. The ICU numbers are not a good way of tracking the decline of this virus. That’s probably why it has been steady for some time.
@Baronvoncass: technically a number of serious ill people are not suitable for ICU intubation which also means it is not the best way to count. They do not just put everyone seriously ill or dying of covid into ICU. This explains why so many elderly deaths were in nursing homes and not ICU hospital beds. That said the number of ICU admissions have exceeded discharges for a period of time and the imbalance is made up of deaths keeping the numbers from growing.
Pity they won’t tell us the ratio of hospitalised vaccinated to hospitalised unvaccinated. It would put a lot of arguments to bed concerning the vaccines.
@Joe_X: They have published this data on a retrospective basis.
But my understanding is that it is all consistent with the published studies:
- 90%+ effective against hospitalisation
- 95%+ effective against death.
When this data is published, it is not that easy to work out the “at risk of hospitalisation” divisor (as in we now have over 98% of high risk population vaccinated).
@Alan Mulcahy: I think you missed the point of information I want. I would like to know how many people in hospital at the moment due to Covid are vaccinated, and how many are unvaccinated. Then, once that information is put into the context of what the percentages of the total population that are vaxxed and unvaxxed, it should close the arguments to the effectivness of vaccince. ( Should but probably wouldn’t) they were able to do it several weeks ago, but nothing since.
@Joe_X: end of September it was almost 50/50 vaccinated/ unvaccinated in hospital out of 302 people .
70% in icu were unvaccinated and 30% were vaccinated.
So I suppose you would have to look at it like 150 out of 90% vaccinated in hospital .
150 out of 10% not vacinated .
But quite a number of both had underline conditions.
31 death notifications. Thoughts with all the families that lost someone as a result of this horrible virus.
I’m 42 and still suffering eight months later and it’s not improving!
So many people effected for life and left to fend for themselves on €200 per week…
@Benny Dowling: Why oh why Benny? So you can be the first person to prove the vaccine doesn’t really work?? Really??
The whole country is opened with a thousand cases a day. Back last Xmas we were in deep trouble with the same number. Vaccines work man…
