4 of a kind: Charming country cottages with thatched roofs

From a refurbished four-bed in Mayo to a charming home in Kildare.

ASIDE FROM THE instant charm a thatched roof has, they do much more than please the eye. From great insulation to using environmentally friendly materials, it’s not hard to see why they’re an attractive feature to those who like living in rural parts of Ireland.

This week, we’ve sourced four character-filled homes with thatched roofs that are on the market right now.

Ballina, Co Mayo – €285,000

This thatched cottage has plenty of modern additions, but hasn’t lost its traditional roots following a refurbishment both inside and out. You can expect underfloor heating in the bedrooms and sitting room, double glazed sash windows and new composite doors. The roof has also had maintenance recently. In terms of safety, the electrics have been upgraded and a new interlinked smoke alarm system has been installed. These are just some of the modern updates you’ll find in this two-bed home that’s 92 m² in size.

It sits off the N59 Crossmolina Road and Ballina town centre is about 7.5km away. A national school is just a kilometre away making it a great option for young families.

Naas, Co Kildare – €950,000

A four-bed with three bathrooms, Lauristina Cottage blends town and country life well as it’s located in the middle of Naas. Originally a single storey cottage, there is a two-storey Edwardian extension to the back which brings the total floor area to 214 m².

One of the bedrooms is located off the family room and has its own ceramic sink in a wooden cabinet. The family room has doors to the back garden and the country-style kitchen is full of natural elements which contribute to its rustic look. The first floor has the remaining three bedrooms, two of which have en suite bathrooms.

Ramelton, Co Donegal – €325,000

The Forge is a three-bed country cottage that’s close to Ramelton village in scenic Donegal. Refurbished and extended in recent years, it’s a bright and roomy home that’s over 100 years old.

Inside comprises a beautifully traditional open plan space that’s home to an oil fired Aga that provides hot water. Two bedrooms are on the ground floor while the third lives in the converted attic space above. The utility room is separate from the main space and the bedrooms share the family bathroom. The garden is big, as is the driveway that will park a number of cars.
