'The people who did this have no moral compass': Couple in their 50s shot in the legs in Belfast

Three masked men entered their house yesterday evening.

Updated at 5.55pm

A MARRIED COUPLE in their 50s were shot in the legs in West Belfast yesterday evening.

The paramilitary-style attack happened at a house in the Turf Lodge area of Norglen Parade at around 6.15pm.

Speaking today, PSNI Chief Inspector Norman Haslett said: “Three masked and armed men came to the door, they proceeded to go into the house and shoot both the occupants, a male and a female.

“Thankfully their injuries are not life-threatening, but the ordeal and the trauma that the couple went through must have been quite horrific.

“This is a brutal, callous and horrific attack on a defenceless couple in their house, at tea-time on a Thursday evening and I condemn it in the strongest possible terms. The people who did this have no moral compass whatsoever.”

Both the man and the woman have been taken to hospital for treatment to their injuries. It’s understood the couple are in a stable condition at Royal Victoria Hospital.

Appeal for information

Sinn Féin MLA Pat Sheehan also condemned the shooting, saying the man and woman are from a respected family and there is no suggestion the pair were mixed up in any kind of criminality.

The shooting of a man and woman in their 50s at a house in Norglen Parade in Turf Lodge was wrong and I condemn it. There can be absolutely no justification for these type of actions.

Wilson added: “I would ask anyone with any information about this incident, or anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in the area, to contact detectives at Musgrave Police Station on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 900 of 12/01/17.

“Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
