Couple arrested for attempting to bury baby alive

Graveyard caretaker contacted police in northern India.

TWO MEN FACE attempted murder charges in Meerut, northern India after allegedly attempting to bury a baby daughter alive.

The men, the girl’s father and uncle, are accused of attempting to sacrifice the baby to protect the health of the family’s other children. The BBC’s Sajoy Majumber reports that the child’s mother denies the accusations.

Police were alerted by a graveyard caretaker, who says the two men told him they were burying a deceased child. However, he says that the child was clearly alive.

The child has been hospitalised suffering malnutrition and dehydration.

One India reports that the couple had lost another child to illness. Police said that they had been advised by  a ‘godman’ to bury their daughter to prevent serious illness among their other children. NDTV reported on Thursday that the ‘godman’ has not been located.

The child’s father and uncle are facing attempted murder charges, according to local police.
