CPSU the latest union to determine Fiscal Compact stance

The Civil and Public Services Union will meet today at its annual conference in Cork.

THE CIVIL AND Public Services Union (CPSU) meets today to decide what position to take in relation to the Fiscal Compact treaty.

At its annual conference in Cork the CPSU will become the latest union to determine its stance on the treaty which has so far divided trade unions.

Members are among the lowest paid in the public service and RTÉ reports that many are not happy with the way their pay packets have been affected by cuts in the public sector.

A number of motions before the delegate conference today will not go down well with the government including one which criticises special pay rises for ministerial advisors. Another urges a No vote on the treaty.

Trade unions have taken different views on the treaty.

While IMPACT yesterday decided to urge its members to vote Yes on the 31 May, Unite, the Technical Engineering and Electrical Union, and Mandate have all called for a No vote.

SIPTU has urged the government to introduce a stimulus package as a quid pro quo for it advocating a Yes vote while the umbrella bod y,the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, has said that members are free to vote whichever way they choose.
