POLICE IN ARMAGH have arrested a 40-year-old man after the bodies of an elderly couple were found at a house in Craigavon.
PSNI officers are treating the deaths of the man and woman – both in their 80s – as suspicious.
A family member raised the alarm after finding the bodies at their home in Upper Ramone Park.
“The couple were in their 80s and tragically lost their lives in their own home today. A family member was the first to find them and we can only begin to imagine the shock, heartbreak and pain this has caused,” the DUP’s David Simpson said in a statement this evening.
He said it is believed the husband and wife were murdered.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the deceased family. This is a horrific scene and one that has shocked the entire Portadown and wider community. It is important the family receive time and space to grieve the loss of two parents in such tragic circumstances.”
Police remain at the scene and investigations are ongoing.
Detective Superintendent Kevin Geddes said: “Police were called to an address in the Upper Ramone Park area of the town at around 3.40pm this afternoon. On arrival, officers found the bodies of an elderly man and woman in the house. We are treating their deaths as murder.
“Earlier in the day, at around 12.20pm, we had a report of a male breaking into a car in the Upper Ramone Park area. We are appealing for anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the area between 11am and 5pm today to get in touch with police on the number 101.
“The family car belonging to the deceased, a grey Renault Kango van, registration NJZ 6101 was taken from the house and later found at around 5pm in the Edenderry Gardens area.
“We need to know the movements of this car from the time it left Upper Ramone Park until it was recovered in Edenderry Gardens. Again, please get in touch with detectives on 101 if you saw it in the Portadown area today between 3.30pm – 5pm.
“I would reassure the public that we now have one person in custody and we will have extra police patrols in the Portadown area.”

It’s not that stupid. As Brenda Fricker said, “When you’re pissed drunk at a train station you’re definitely Irish but when you win an Oscar you’re definitely British”.
Its a long standing tradition of the BBC to do this.
Same applies for Scottish sports people, they are British when they win and Scottish when they lose.
I don’t think it is a deliberate policy but just a deeply ingrained mindset in the British media.

The Irish amateurs also had a good week at the International European amateur open in Slovakia with a 2nd and 3rd place finish and 5 in the top 20, a huge achievement that shows that we keep producing great golfers on this island. Half the walker cup team could be Irish at this rate.
