4 events for... creative writers looking to hone their craft

It’s time to put pen to paper.

IF CREATIVE WRITING is a skill you’ve wanted to improve since you sat your Junior Cert but you’ve never quite gotten around to doing anything about it, one of these four events might be a good place to start.

From writing alongside coffee and cake to being taught by an award-winning writer, read on to see four events around the country for creative writers of all levels…  

1.  Creative Writing for Beginners Course

When: Tuesday evenings across five weeks, from 23 April – 21 May

Where: A4 Sounds, St Joseph’s Parade, Off Upper Dorset St, Dublin 1

Always wanted to dip your toe into the world of creative writing but aren’t sure where to start? This could be the course for you. Taught by writer and film-maker Helen Flanagan, the course will cover the basics of creative writing, including character, plot and narrative, theme and point of view, setting and tone, and dialogue.

2. A Guide to the Short Story with Alan McMonagle

When: 6 April

Where: The Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar, Co Mayo

At this one-day course, award-winning writer Alan McMonagle will bring participants through all elements of an effective short story through a mix of theory, exercise and class discussion. The course is suitable for both beginners and more experienced writers.

3. Festival of Writing & Ideas

When: 7-9 June

Where: Borris House, Borris, Co Carlow  

Returning for its eighth year, the Borris House Festival of Writing & Ideas is a three-day long event for everyone who enjoys putting pen to paper. Guests can choose to camp on the grounds or visit for the day, with more than 65 speakers taking part in 50 events over the weekend.

4. The Heart Work: Writers’ Session

When: 8 April

Where: Brew & Bake Cafe, 336 Lisburn Road, Belfast

An event for “all who write”, the Writers’ Session provides a coffee shop atmosphere to get productive and work alongside others in 25 minute bursts, with breaks in between to socialise and enjoy tea and a treat.
