Woman dragged away by crocodile in Australia was celebrating friend's cancer treatment

An Australian MP has called for crocodile hunting safaris to bring down the population of the animals.

A WOMAN DRAGGED away by a crocodile was celebrating the end of her friend’s cancer treatment.

Cindy Waldron, 46, had been swimming at Thornton Beach in the World Heritage-listed Daintree National Park in Queensland when she was taken by the crocodile.

She had been staying in the area with her friend Leeann Mitchell according to the Australian Daily Telegraph.

Mitchell had been walking arm-in-arm into the water with Waldron when the attack happened.

Despite Mitchell’s attempts, she was unable to pull Waldron to safety.

Speaking to the Australian Broadcasting Corp, police senior constable Russell Parker said: “They had been walking along the beach and they’ve decided to go for a swim just in waist-deep water at Thornton Beach and probably a very nice, clear night, but obviously may not have been aware of the dangers.”

A search for Waldron’s body is getting back underway today.

Following the attack, Australian independent MP Bob Katter has said that the population of crocodiles in Queensland had been “exploding” since the 1970s and, writing on his Facebook page, suggested crocodile hunting safaris as a solution to the problem.

The incident was yesterday branded “human stupidity” by Warren Entsch, a local MP and former crocodile farmer.

“You can only get there by ferry, and there are signs there saying watch out for the bloody crocodiles. If you go in swimming at 10 o’clock at night, you’re going to get consumed,” he said.
