Dad’s Army actor Philip Madoc dies, aged 77

The Welsh actor died after a short illness.

WELSH ACTOR PHILIP Madoc has died after a short illness, BBC News reported today.

The 77-year-old was best known for playing the title role in the BBC drama The Life and Times of David Lloyd George and for his role in Dad’s Army. He also made several appearances in Doctor Who and Porridge.

He is survived by his ex-wife Ruth, son Rhys and daughter Lowri.

Probably Madoc’s most famous television moment came as the U-boat commander in the Don’t Tell Him Pike sketch in Dad’s Army:
