Daily Fix: Saturday

All the news from the hustings today.

EVERY evening, TheJournal.ie brings your Daily Fix: our pick of the highlights (and some of the lows) of today’s campaign trail.

GOOD DAY FOR:

  • The little guy – John Gormley has managed grab a meagre attention rating of just 2 per cent amongst Twitter users today – however all other candidates were trending with negative sentiment. Mentions of Gormley, meanwhile, remained neutral… small mercies.

BAD DAY FOR:

  • Graduates – who will no doubt be worried about the possibility of a “graduate tax” being introduced. Labour says the Fine Gael proposal will create a brain drain, but FG have dismissed this – saying that Labour’s free education policies will mean only one thing: “exorbitant, higher taxes”.
  • “Spats and point-scoring” – Enda Kenny said he won’t have any of it. You have been warned.

JIBE OF THE DAY:

Enda Kenny has called Eamon Gilmore “presumptuous and disrespectful to the electorate” for trying to discuss a programme for government before he has been elected.

Fine Gael TD for Mayo Michael Ring was out and about canvassing in Westport today. At one point something happened which, try as we might, we can’t seem to find the words to fully explain…
