  • The government has confirmed that the Dublin-West by-election is to be held on 27 October. The election to fill Brian Lenihan’s seat will be held alongside the Presidential Election and two referenda.
  • Two-thirds of Irish adults find financial terms confusing, according to new research by EBS and the National Adult Literacy Agency. More women than men find financial terms confusing, the study says, however women are perceived to manage their personal finances better than their male counterparts.
  • A prisoner who escaped from custody while being treated at a Limerick hospital last week has been apprehended by gardaí and returned to prison. Christopher O’Donnell, 25, was being treated at Mid-Western Regional Hospital on 29 August when he escaped.
  • A man in his 40s is in a critical condition in hospital after being shot in Ballyfermot, Dublin, this afternoon. Gardaí say that the gunman escaped the scene on a bicycle.
  • The Transport Minister Leo Varadkar has said that he doesn’t view Aer Lingus as vital strategic asset and that he would be willing to sell it.  Speaking on Newstalk’s Breakfast show, Varadkar said he no longer believed that the airline could be deemed “indispensable”.
  • Specialist cave divers from the UK are to be flown in from the UK this evening to try and recover the body of a diver who was found yesterday evening after he went missing on Monday. The body of Artur Kozlowski, an experienced Polish diver, was located at 52m underwater last night in Galway cave but has yet to be brought to surface.
  • Today a Russian jet carrying a top ice hockey team crashed into a river bank during taking off, killing at least 43 people and leaving two others critically injured. The plane was carrying the Lokomotiv ice hockey team from Yaroslavl to Minsk to play in the opening game of the season of the Kontinental Hockey League.
  • A Danish family that were kidnapped over six months ago by Somali pirates have been released. The family, including three teenagers, along with two crew members were kidnapped by pirates as they sailed on the Indian Ocean – a piracy hotspot.
  • A reporter with the Guardian newspaper has been questioned by police investigating the leaking of information pertaining to the Metropolitan Police’s probe into phone hacking by the News of the World. Journalist Amelia Hill has broken a series of  stories naming people who have been arrested as part of the hacking investigation.
  • A leaked document from American retailer Best Buy may hint at the release date of the next model of Apple’s best-selling iPhone range. An apparent photograph of a computer screen shows management being asked to provide a store head at 6am on the morning of October 21, so that display teams can gain access to stores and install “an Apple fixture”.
  • If Ireland win an unlikely World Cup and Hollywood produce the film, who’ll play the lead roles? TheScore.ie have some suggestions - listen up, Hollywood!
