Dalai Lama's nephew killed during Florida walk for Tibet

Jigme Norbu was struck by a car while taking part in the march to mark the 50th anniversary of the failed Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule.

THE NEPHEW OF the Dalai Lama has died after being hit by a car while walking along a highway during a pro-Tibet march in Florida.

A representative of the Dalai Lama in New Delhi, India, confirmed the death of Jigme Norbu to CNN: “Yes, it is true unfortunately,” he said.

Norbu, 45, had been walking along a highway in Flager County as part of the “Walk for Tibet” march, when he was struck by a car driven by Keith O’Dell, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The walk was intended to mark the 50th anniversary of the failed Tibetan rebellion against Chinese rule and to raise awareness about human rights abuses in Tibet.
