Coast Guard issues safety warning about Dalkey Island

People on jet skis or boats have been urged to be cautious as swimmers “are virtually invisible to see until it’s too late”.

THE DÚN LAOGHAIRE Coast Guard has issued a safety warning to people about Dalkey Island.

The organisation has urged people to be cautious when on jet skis or boats in the area as swimmers “are virtually invisible to see until it’s too late”, snorkellers are “nearly impossible to see” and it’s “difficult to gauge” kayakers’ speed.

The Coast Guard added that leisure craft and ferry boats sometimes distract people from noticing others in the water, and “rowing skiffs cannot manoeuvre clear of fast approaching craft”.

A blue and white flag warns people of diving activities and that people could emerge from the water unexpectedly.

There’s a recommended speed of five knots in and around Dalkey Sound and Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council bylaws stipulate that all craft must stay at least 300 metres off land.
