Data Protection Commission launches investigation into Google Ireland

Google said it will “engage fully” with the investigation.

THE DATA PROTECTION Commission (DPC) has launched a statutory inquiry into Google Ireland’s processing of personal data.

The investigation is in relation to Google’s online Ad Exchange.

The Commission said the investigation arose from its ongoing examination of data protection compliance in the area of personalised online advertising.

It also received a number of submissions on the matter, including those made by Dr Johnny Ryan, chief policy officer at Brave, a private web browser.

“The purpose of the inquiry is to establish whether processing of personal data carried out at each stage of an advertising transaction is in compliance with the relevant provisions of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR),” the Commission said in a statement.

“The GDPR principles of transparency and data minimisation, as well as Google’s retention practices, will also be examined.”

In a statement to TheJournal.ie, a Google spokesperson said: “We will engage fully with the DPC’s investigation and welcome the opportunity for further clarification of Europe’s data protection rules for real-time bidding.

“Authorised buyers using our systems are subject to stringent policies and standards.”

Since 25 May last year, the punishment for companies in breach of GDPR is a maximum fine of €20 million or up to 4% of their turnover for the previous year, whichever is higher.

The irony of Google withdrawing Android OS and gapps from Huawei handsets in the interest of security. Huawei devices will be much more data safe without it.

@Paraic: the irony of the US having “spying concerns” against the backdrop of their actual spying exposed by wikileaks.

@Quiet Goer: rooted my phone, use orbot with duck and go, downloaded all my apps from Aptoide and removed everything Google related as possible. Battery lasts half a day longer. Goes to show how much Google stalk us.

@Vory2Stars: I do the same unfortunately it is not easy for non technical people. Someone should produce a phone under the Android open license, and if you want to install GAPPS so be it.

@Quiet Goer: Same here I use DuckDuckGo and Brave as my browser and would recommend others to do the same.

This is a good read here about Ireland’s relationship with Big tech

    https://www.google.ie/amp/s/www.politico.eu/interactive/ireland-blocks-the-world-on-data-privacy/amp/

I think it’s rich for the US to point fingers when they’ve ZERO privacy laws themselves, but it does raise some good points

Surely (if Google are found guilty) then 4% of their turnover would be more than €20 million?

The people who introduced these stupid “data protection” laws are the cause of a lot of the “spying” as every website or app worrhy of the name used the system as an excuse to demand their viewers or users sign up to rediculous terms and agreements, whic most people do automatically because they cannot be bothered to read reams of gobbledegook from the site. More jobs for the boys!!
