David Black's widow: "Things like this just don’t happen anymore"

Yvonne Black says his death was even more shocking because David didn’t feel like he was in any danger.

DAVID BLACK’S WIFE, Yvonne, has spoken to UTV to mark the four-week anniversary of his murder.

In the interview that went out on UTV Live at 6pm she details the moments she found out about the prison officer’s death and the aftermath.

She reminisces about the day he was shot, saying it was an ordinary Thursday like any other. “He got up and defrosted the windows of the cars, mine, his and Kyle’s [their son],” she says.

The last time Yvonne spoke to her husband David was when he rang her on his way to work to ask her did their daughter Kyra have enough money for her driving lesson that day. Shortly after this call he was shot dead.

The 52-year-old was driving to work at Maghaberry jail on the M1. It is understood a car with Dublin registration places pulled up alongside his vehicle and opened fire.

Yvonne’s describes his funeral as “immensely, immensely difficult” but said she got through it because of how proud she was of David.

We are so proud of him. We could hold our heads up high because for all of these years we couldn’t tell anyone David was a prison officer and for the first time we could go out and it didn’t matter because everyone knew now.

She says his death was even more shocking because David didn’t feel like he was in any danger. “There were threats before,” she explains but there hadn’t been anything in years.

Six people were arrested in connection with David Black’s murder but all have been released without charge.

A group calling themselves ‘The IRA’ has claimed responsibility for the murder.
