Man arrested on suspicion of human trafficking after woman reported being raped

The woman went to police in Derry for help last night.

A 28-YEAR-OLD MAN has been arrested in Derry as part of an investigation into human trafficking.

The PSNI said the man was arrested after a 26-year-old Eastern European woman came to police for help last night.

She is currently receiving treatment for a range of injuries following allegations of rape and assault. She is also being assessed as a potential victim of human trafficking.

Detective Inspector Mark Bell, from PSNI’s Human Trafficking Unit, said: “A woman asked police at Strand Road for assistance last night and our enquiries led us to arrest a 28-year-old man a short time later.

“These enquiries, including a search of a property in the city, are continuing as we work with partner agencies to ensure the woman receives all appropriate support and assistance.”
