PSNI says Armagh security operation will continue overnight

A mortar-type device needs to be made safe in the Bog Road area.

POLICE IN NORTHERN Ireland believe a security operation will continue through the night in Armagh as experts examine and work to make safe a mortar-type device found in the Cullyhanna area.

The explosive was discovered in the Bog Road/Lisleitrim Road area in the south of the county during a major search that began yesterday.

Army technical officers are at the scene and nearby homes have been evacuated. The device is thought to have been planted by dissident Republicans.

A police helicopter and large numbers of personnel are also patrolling the site. Sniffer dogs and metal detectors have been deployed.

More details will be revealed at a press briefing tomorrow.
