THE TREND FOR pop-up food events has boomed over the last few years, but this picnic looked very special indeed.

Called the Diner En Blanc, it requires the participants to dress all in white and bring their white picnic gear – including chairs and tables – with them.

AP reports that 5000 people dressed in white turned up for the event. The most exciting bit? The location was revealed at the last minute.

And what a location…

There was dining and dancing under the sky at Pier 26 on the Hudson River in Manhattan’s tony Tribeca neighbourhood.

Wendy Chang, a Hawaii native who works for an architectural firm that helped build One World Trade Center, bought the white chairs she shared with friends at IKEA.

While there, she also spotted the headdress she wore night: a white lampshade.

“This is great for people watching,” she told AP. “I love it.”

Cindy Joseph, a Brooklyn insurance analyst, called the evening “amazing.”

You meet great new people under the stars.

Each participant pre-registered for the event, paying $30. Food and drinks also were available at cost.

The event started in Paris in 1988 and has expanded to 60 cities on five continents.

Organisers say the one in New York – which saw 125,000 people signing up this year – is the biggest.
