People are now cooking meals in their dishwasher

They’re not just for washing dishes, it turns out.

DISHWASHERS ARE for washing dishes, right? It’s all in the name. “Dish-washer”.

Well, you might think that, but you’d be wrong. An apparently growing number of people are cooking dinner in their dishwashers.

Here’s how it works:

You put the food in sealed containers. You lob it on the rack alongside your mucky coffee cups and week-old pasta remnants.

Then, you stick the dishwasher on its highest setting, leave it to do its thing, and bam! Dinner.

The idea of dishwasher cooking has been around for years – at least since the 1970s, when the LA Times printed this recipe for poached dishwasher salmon.

The theory is that dishwashers run consistently at a lower temperature than most home cooks can manage, poaching the food gently and thoroughly.

But a 2013 book of dishwasher recipes, plus the internet’s capacity to promote weird niche interests, have led to a revival.

A quick Instagram search reveals a number of dishwasher-cooked meals, including asparagus:

All kinds of vegetables, in fact:

And even lobster:

There are instructional videos.

There are lists of recipes, and blog posts. There are news articles on people using their dishwashers to cook the Christmas turkey.

There’s even an entire Wikihow on how to makelasagne in the dishwasher.

If you want to try it, here are Lisa Casali’s own instructional videos – including sea bass fillet and roast veal in a mackerel sauce. Let us know how you get on!
