Child (9) finds remains of baby while playing in her garden

Police believe the newborn was as young as three days old.

POLICE IN THE United States have launched an investigation after the remains of a newborn baby were found in a garden.

The grisly discovery was made over the weekend in Westmont, Los Angeles by a young girl playing in her back garden.

Police said ‘significant portions’ of the newborn’s body were missing.

“The infant appears to have been dismembered,” officials said in a statement. The baby is believed to be as young as three days old.

The 9-year-old girl who discovered the remains was playing with her dog in the back garden at the time.

“The dog was sniffing the ball… so I was going to get the ball and I got it. I saw the leg,” Britany Placencia told CBS News, “So I just ran to my mom and told her what I saw.”

Police have launched a search of the local area, checking bins and other gardens in the neighbourhood.
