Do not swim notice issued for Claremont Beach in Howth

Fingal County Council has issued a 72-hour do not swim notice due to suspected water contamination from birds.

PEOPLE HAVE BEEN warned by Fingal County Council not to swim on Claremont Beach in Howth Co Dublin due to suspected water contamination.

FCC has issued a 72-hour do-not-swim notice due to the suspected impacts from animals and birds and contamination of urban surface waters discharging into the bathing water.

Claremont Beach is a small cove-like beach situated close to the harbour in Howth.

The council said in a statement that the results of testing samples taken today will be available on Thursday 12 July.

If clear, it is hoped that the beach can re-open for bathing.

The beach remains open to the public but beach users have been asked to respect the do-not-swim notice.

Members of the public intending to enter the water at any beach in Ireland are advised to check the water quality in advance by accessing the EPA website at www.beaches.ie or checking the notice board at the entrance to each beach.
