WITH THE EYES of the world upon them, President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un head into their historic summit balancing the promise of peace against the spectre of a growing nuclear threat.
Yet even before they met, Trump announced plans to leave early, raising questions about whether his aspirations for an ambitious outcome had been scaled back.
The first-ever meeting between a US president and a North Korean leader was to kick off at 9am Tuesday (which is 7 hours ahead of Ireland) with a handshake, an image sure to be devoured from Washington to Pyongyang and beyond.
Trump and Kim planned to meet one-on-one for most of an hour – joined only by translators. Then aides to each were to come in for more discussions and a working lunch.
Meetings between staffs and representatives are going well and quickly....but in the end, that doesn’t matter. We will all know soon whether or not a real deal, unlike those of the past, can happen!
In the run-up to the talks in Singapore, Trump had optimistically predicted the two men could strike a nuclear deal or forge a formal end to the Korean War in the course of a single meeting or over several days.
But on the eve of the summit, the White House unexpectedly announced Trump would depart Singapore by tomorrow evening, meaning his time with Kim would be fairly brief. And Secretary of State Mike Pompeo sought to keep expectations for the summit in check.
“We are hopeful this summit will have set the conditions for future successful talks,” Pompeo said, describing a far more modest goal than Trump had outlined days earlier.
The sudden change in schedule added to a dizzying few days of foreign policy activity for Trump, who shocked US allies over the weekend when he used a meeting of the Group of Seven industrialised economies in Canada to alienate America’s closest friends in the West.
As for Singapore, the White House said Trump was leaving early because negotiations had moved “more quickly than expected,” but gave no details about any possible progress in preliminary talks.
On the day before the meeting, weeks of preparation appeared to pick up in pace, with US and North Korean officials meeting throughout Monday at a Singapore hotel.
The president planned to stop in Guam and Hawaii on his way back to Washington.
Trump spoke only briefly in public today, forecasting a “nice” outcome. Kim spent the day mostly out of view – until he left his hotel for a late-night tour of Singapore sights, including the Flower Dome at Gardens by the Bay, billed as the world’s biggest glass greenhouse.

It was a striking about-face from less than a year ago, when Trump was threatening “fire and fury” against Kim, who in turn scorned the American president as a “mentally deranged US dotard.” As it happens, the North Korean and the American share a tendency to act unpredictably on the world stage.
Beyond the impact on both leaders’ political fortunes, the summit could shape the fate of countless people – the citizens of impoverished North Korea, the tens of millions living in the shadow of the North’s nuclear threat, and millions more worldwide. Or, it could amount to little more than a much-photographed handshake.

Still, the sense of anticipation was great in Singapore, with people lining spotless streets holding cellphones high as Trump headed to meet Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
As Trump and Lee sat down for a working lunch at the Istana house, the president sounded optimistic, telling Lee, “We’ve got a very interesting meeting in particular tomorrow, and I think things can work out very nicely.” Trump had earlier tweeted about “excitement in the air!”
US and North Korean officials huddled throughout the day at the Ritz-Carlton hotel ahead of the sit-down aimed at resolving a standoff over Pyongyang’s nuclear arsenal.
Delegates were outlining specific goals for what the leaders should try to accomplish and multiple scenarios for resolving key issues, a senior US official said, adding that the meetings were also an ice breaker of sorts, allowing the teams to get better acquainted after decades of minimal contact between their nations.
Trump’s early exit will be his second from a summit in just a few days.
As he was trying to build a bridge with Kim, he was smashing longtime alliances with Western allies with his abrasive performance at the G-7. After his premature departure from Quebec, he continued to tweet angrily at Trudeau from Singapore, saying today, “Fair Trade is now to be called Fool Trade if it is not Reciprocal.”
Trump advisers cast his actions as a show of strength before the Kim meeting.
Alluding to the North’s concerns that giving up its nuclear weapons could surrender its primary deterrent to forced regime change, Pompeo told reporters that the US was prepared to take action to provide North Korea with “sufficient certainty” that denuclearisation “is not something that ends badly for them.”
He would not say whether that included the possibility of withdrawing US troops from the Korean Peninsula, but said the context of the discussions was “radically different than ever before”.
“I can only say this,” Pompeo said. “We are prepared to take what will be security assurances that are different, unique, than America’s been willing to provide previously.”
The North has faced crippling diplomatic and economic sanctions as it has advanced development of its nuclear and ballistic missile programs. Pompeo held firm to Trump’s position that sanctions will remain in place until North Korea denuclearises – and said they would even increase if diplomatic discussions did not progress positively.
Experts believe the North is close to being able to target the entire US mainland with its nuclear-armed missiles, and while there’s deep skepticism that Kim will quickly give up those hard-won nukes, there’s also some hope that diplomacy can replace the animosity between the US and the North.
While advisers say Trump has been reviewing briefing materials, the president insists his gut instincts will matter most when he gets in the room with Kim. He told reporters he thinks he will know almost immediately whether a deal can be made, saying: “I will know, just my touch, my feel. That’s what I do.”

whenever there’s a viable flight option from Shannon I will always choose to fly from Shannon, heck I’ve gone via heathrow / paris to avoid flying from Dublin, and forget cork straight off.. the damn road to cork is a joke.
Shane there is no comparison between Dublin and Shannon Airports .
Shannon passenger numbers 2013 : 1.6 million

They’re not comparable .
Have flown the last few times from Shannon to visit my in laws and its a doddle.. As someone who hates travel the most important thing is NO DELAYS and NO HASSLE.. Shannon will oblige..
Contrast that with a 16 hour delay while i was 5 months pregnant in Dublin in 2008, 6 hour delay in 2008..
16 hour delays can happen anywhere and are rarely the fault of the airport.
The big advantage for an airport like Cork or Shannon is that you pass through security, immigation etc. so much faster than in a bigger airport.
However, delays are where their downside kicks in. If you pick up a long delay, large airports usually have a number of facilities where you can amuse yourself. In a small airport, if you’re lucky, you might find a decent book in the bookshop.
Pierce.. I wouldnt agree with that.. Destination choice in Shannon was limited and now that they have added more flights thanks to Michael O Leary the Airport is more successful. People are voting with their feet.
Dublin will always be the busiest airport and thats ok cos its the capital city. Was only in Cork once and it was ok. The roads into and out of both are a bloody nightmare.
Shannon is doing a fine job of serving the West. Most of dont want to go to Dublin thank you very much. Too much bloody hassle.
I don’t know how you think that Dublin airport is responsible for a 16 hour delay or that Shannon airport would never experience flight delays! Yes, Shannon is faster to pass through and you’re less likely to experience small delays but major flight delays are nothing to do with the airport.
Delighted that Shannon is on the up and up no thanks to Fianna Fáil or unions. Twenty years ago Shannon Mail order had a turn over of 13 million pounds equal 20 million euro went out of business thru mis management and unions. Thanks to Michael O Leary I won’t have to drive 100 miles to Kerry , or Knock forget Dublin or Cork.
Thats the problem with Ireland. So many of you choose to live in sparsely populated areas. But want a service on your doorstep. Whether its airports, jobs or broadband. 6.3 million people on the island with 12 airports. Crazy.
New Zealand with a smaller population has 40 airports with services and 12 served by international connections.The Mid west and Shannon region is not a sparsely populated area either. As it stands 2million people are now within 90 mins drive of Shannon airport.
Bobby you understand that of the 4.6 million people living in the Republic of Ireland over 3million live outside the greater Dublin area. Those people are also paying their taxes and have as much right to services as those within a stones throw of the capital.
In all fairness New Zealand is rather big compared to our little burb but I get your point. BTW Shannon was always viable but suffered by being Dublins lacky…i.e. not allowed to compete. Now all bets are off. Go Shannon.
If the state no longer has direct ownership of the 2 companies, how will this affect Shannon Free Zone in the light of EU competition law?
Do companies there benefit from a tax free status and if so should they continue to benefit?
Exactly what I was thinking Paul when I read the article. The Shannon Development Company has been offering govt tax breaks and incentives to sources tenants and customers for their premises. Assuming those tax breaks are gone with govt ownership , SDC’s costs will jump immediately without the equivalent jump in Revenue.
