Poll: Do you donate blood?

Health Minister Simon Harris has encouraged people to give blood over the coming weeks.

HEALTH MINISTER SIMON Harris has urged people to give blood at their local blood donation clinics over the coming weeks.

One in four people will require a blood transfusion at some time in their lives. However, only 2% of the population donate blood.

Over the Christmas period and into the new year, the blood supply diminishes as collections are reduced but demand remains unchanged.

Harris noted that hundreds of people every week are helped in their recovery by the ready availability of blood, thanking donors and the Irish Blood Transfusion Service.

We want to know: Do you donate blood?

Poll Results:

I can't donate blood (4280)
No, I've never donated blood (3193)
I have in the past but not in the last year (2281)
Yes, several times a year (1473)
Yes, once or twice a year (931)

I donated blood for almost 30 years until last year when I had anaphylaxis (unrelated to donating) which means I can’t donate any more.

Whatever about those of us who can’t donate, those who either have never donated or haven’t done so for a while should try and donate more. It’s fairly painless and does save lives.

17.5% is so high because you cant donate blood if you lived in England during the time of the mad cow disease which is stupid as it was over here too. Nurses who trained in England too cant donate for the same reason. Such a shame as i really wanted to donate and on a regular basis.

@Siobhan Rosemary: It’s quite a leap to assume the 17.5% who can’t donate blood don’t do so because they lived in England during the 80′s. I can’t donate because I receive a blood product every 3 weeks, without this I’d be dead.

@Boyne Sharky: It’s more than likely England, but previous transfusions or one of the permanent diseases. Considering the percentage of gay men barred at ~5% of population, then only 1% would be because of this. I donated for 10 years before getting barred due to UK rule, but continued to donate in Europe. I understand the rationale behind the ban, and also that the supply is never low enough to need the 17 5%, but I would question if we import blood from countries where these bans are valid.

@Gulliver Foyle: I don’t know that the blood supply is never low enough to be concerned about the ban of certain individuals. For example the Irish Blood Transfusion Service website indicates only 4 days supply of O- and B-.

    https://www.giveblood.ie/

I can’t swear to it but I understand that we already do import certain blood products from abroad, it would be logical to believe therefore that we also share surplus stock with other countries. I realise what this means and, of course, there may be other considerations that I’m unaware of but, given the relative rarity and limited lifespan of some blood types they could hardly dump something so valuable.

I gave platelets monthly for years when I was in Cork. Each platelet bag saves 4 normal blood bags from being destroyed to make a platelet bag. Unfortunately you can only give it in Cork and Dublin due to the specialist machines needed and I moved to the Midlands this year. But if any blood donors in that region are able to (takes over an hour, is done during working hours and you have to have the right veins for it) Its a big help.

It must stay in the blood which is odd because if you had it as an infant you can give it regardless of your age. It appears any age above 10 if you got it you can’t give it.

Tried to give blood for @giveblood.ie last time around at blood clinic at Oakwood Arms Hotel, Shannon, but they 1st said they needed to see my blood sugar medication, when I came back the next day, when I was finally approved they couldn’t find my veins. And they asked, did you drink a lot of coffee prior to your blood donation, I said yes of course, how else can I survive the day. And the Irish Blood Service nurse on duty said likely due to excessive coffee intake your blood veins can be harder to locate in your arm. Why couldn’t this advice on 1st intake is beyond me. They recommended to only drink water on the day of the blood donation, of course in combination with plenty of healthy nutritious foods. Giving Blood can save lives. But I don’t really understand some [peoples frustrations why the Irish blood transfusion service can’t accept blood samples who have been in the UK. Reason they give: If you have lived in the UK for more than a year between 1980-1996, you can’t give blood. This is because of the risk of contamination via blood of the CJD virus. Btw if who ever even once in your lifetime received blood even 3 decades ago you are also excluded. Keep Calm, and give in to the Vampires :) But serious do give blood, if yo can!

@Tracey Coleman: it has nothing to do with BMI, it’s do do with blood volume. The amount of blood we have is dependent on weight along with other factors including sex and age so for someone under 50kg a unit of blood is too high a percentage of their blood volume.

@Tracey Coleman: I’m 5’3” a healthy weight – over the threshold at between 51 and 55kg, so I should be able to give blood, but every time I’ve attempted to give blood I’ve started to pass out. First time the nurse told me to tell them to stop if I started to lose consciousness and as I started to black out I did, even though they stopped they were very put out and made it clear they didn’t believe me. After that I didn’t try again for a couple of years. Better experience that time, still started to pass out though. I’ll probably try again, but to be honest I wouldn’t do it alone and if I gave the same experience I don’t think I would try to give blood again

But the ‘rules’ changed a few years ago, they can use parts of your blood for other things, besides transfusions, so my sister became a donor here, an’ I became one in Co. Derry. I donated, intermittently over a few decades, ten times. On my eleventh visit to a donation centre I answered a new question on the form, whether I had worked for six months or longer in a tropical country. I ticked Yes and they politely refused my donation – something to do with the possibility of malarial residues in the blood. (I never had malaria.) The six-month tropical rule also eliminates Irish personnel who have served on UN peacekeeping missions. Pity.
