The Ford Focus and Opel Astra are two spacious mid-size hatchbacks with economical engines.

LOW MILEAGE, SPACIOUS cabins and plenty of safety features? These two family cars tick those boxes and more.

First up, this 2016 Ford Focus (€22,500)

The Ford Focus really is one of the best-to-drive cars of its size currently on the market. It has long been a firm favourite for Irish families in need of space and performance.

This particular five-door hatchback version is an ex-demo model and comes with a five-year warranty for added peace of mind.

It is finished in ‘Magnetic’ metallic paint and features a chrome window trim and finish on the door line. It has a body coloured rear spoiler as body-coloured bumpers, door handles and mirrors.

It also has front fog lights and privacy glass and as well as rolls on 17-inch 5×2 spoke alloy wheels.

It is powered by a 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine with a five-speed manual transmission driving power to the front wheels. It produces 100hp and goes from 0 to 100km/h in 12.7 seconds and onto a top speed of 185km/h. The official combined fuel economy figure is 4.8 litres/100km.

It falls into tax band A3, which means it is €190 a year to tax. The car has just 500km on the clock and a price tag of €22,500.

Next, this 2016 Opel Astra (€21,695)

The Astra is one of the best cars Opel has made in years.

This particular five-door hatchback model is finished in Sovereign Siver metallic paint and comes with 16-inch structure steel wheels. It has chrome-effect upper window trim and grille and body coloured bumpers and rear spoiler.

Inside, the seats are finished in Talino cloth in Jet Black and the boot can hold 370 litres with the rear seats up and 1210 litres with the rear seats folded.
