Walks by the river, drinks by the fire: Countryside luxury at this Georgian gem for €1.5m

Mamree Lodge in Inistioge, Kilkenny is a dream house for people who like to entertain.

HISTORY BUFFS WITH a dream of life in the countryside – and a €1,500,000 budget – need look no further than beautiful Mamree Lodge in Inistioge, Co Kilkenny.

This Georgian house, built in 1750, sits on the Woodstock estate, which was once the location of Woodstock House and the first home to Sir William Fownes. Fownes, the son of a Lord Mayor of Dublin, inherited a substantial amount of land in Kilkenny during the 1730s.

During the Civil War, Woodstock House was burned to the ground. Today, Mamree Lodge is once of the last standing structures on the estate that’s habitable.

The price tag is reflective of the 4.5 acres of land that comes with it, and that leads directly onto the River Nore. Accessed by a stone pillared entrance, an electric gate ensures privacy and access to a sweeping avenue that’s flanked with mature woodland.

The house itself is spread over an impressive 380m². The large rooms, as you might expect, are flooded with natural light, while the decor is simple and tasteful throughout.

The rooms are well-connected, spacious and simply exude luxury  as they nod to their history thanks to the well-maintained plasterwork and ornate finishes.
