AT FIRST GLANCE, it would be easy to assume that this 18th century castle is nestled in the rolling countryside, miles from the nearest village. But Clonskeagh Castle, or 80 Whitebeam Road, sits just minutes from Dublin City centre.

This historic castle was built by Henry Jackson in 1789. An iron founder and a member of the United Irishmen, he bought 41 acres and carefully positioned the build on the southwest corner of the site. As a result, the social rooms in the house have great views of the Dublin mountains and distant countryside.

When George Thompson bought the home in 1811, he extended the castle, adding two, three-storey towers. Ownership of the castle changed hands a number of times and has currently been in the same family since 1992. But it’s now time for change and this 620 m² building is on the market for €2.95 million.

The elegant hall on the ground floor leads to all of the social rooms – a reception room, a living room and an open plan kitchen and dining space for more casual meals seeing as there is a dedicated dining room also.

As you might expect, there are well-kept period features throughout the home which only back-up to the rich history of this interesting house.

There are seven bedrooms in the main house, and the next level is split to give each bedroom enough space. Secret staircases also lead to the next level up where more rooms sit, making them ideal secluded spaces for anyone who works from home.

And if seven bedrooms weren’t enough, there is also a more recently added apartment that’s self-contained and has access to the lovely surrounding garden.

The kids are sure to delight in the underground tunnel that sits under the house along with a basement wit plenty of storage and a cellar.

Clonskeagh Castle originally sat on over 40 acres but these days, whoever buys this stand-out home will have just half an acre to maintain. This doesn’t take away from the amount of outdoor private space and parking, for many cars, this castle has. And, seeing as it sits in Clonskeagh on the south side of Dublin, the city centre is just 2.5 miles from the property ensuring this unique home will let its next owner experience the best of all worlds.

Clonskeagh Castle, 80 Whitebeam Road, Clonskeagh, Dublin 14 is on the market for €2.95 million through Sherry Fitzgerald.
