The Army Bomb Disposal Unit was called to the scene.

LAST UPDATE | 13 May 2020

DEFENCE FORCE MEMBERS have completed an operation in Dublin 8 this evening after a War of Independence era grenade was discovered at Harold’s Cross Bridge.

Gardaí were alerted at approximately 7.30pm this evening after a device was recovered from the water near the bridge. A Defence forces team arrived at the scene at 8.30pm.

The area around Harold’s Cross Bridge and Upper Clanbrassil Street was sealed off earlier as Gardaí and the Army Bomb Disposal Unit assessed the situation.

A Defence Forces spokesperson said: “On arrival a cordon was established for the duration of the operation.

“The item was assessed to be a War of Independence era mills grenade and was rendered safe at the scene. The team departed the scene at approximately 10.30pm.

“Should members of the public encounter suspicious items, or hazardous substances, they are advised to maintain a safe distance and inform An Garda Síochána.”
