SIPTU members at Dublin and Cork airports in massive vote for strike action

The margin of the DAA vote was 94 per cent in favour of industrial action.

Updated 4.34pm

SIPTU MEMBERS AT the Dublin Airport have voted overwhelmingly for strike action as part of the long-running dispute over the airport’s pension scheme.

The margin of the DAA vote was 94 per cent in favour of industrial action and 89 per cent in favour of strike action.

A further vote on witholding contributions from the pension scheme was passed with an 81 per cent margin in favour.

The dispute centres on on the deficit within the Irish Airlines Superannuation Scheme (IASS) which includes Aer Lingus employees as well those in the DAA.

“Before proceeding further, we will now be moving to consult with those of our members who are not in the IASS scheme and indeed who have no proper pension provision at all,” said SIPTU advisor Dermot O’Loughlin.

“We will also be consulting with the other trade unions in the DAA group before proceeding with any type of action,” he added.

Union members at Aer Lingus have also been been voting on industrial action with a decision expected in the coming days.

SITPU claim that the decision on strike action comes as a result of the failure of the employers to engage in discussions over the pension scheme:

It is the view of the Pensions Committee that this situation has come about as a consequence of the intransigence and procrastination of the trustees of the scheme, the regulatory authority and the DAA.
