Dublin Council warns of low water levels

Residents in the greater Dublin area are warned to conserve water supplies.

THE GREATER Dublin area is at risk of running out of water, Dublin City Council have warned.

People are using about 148 litres of drinking water every day.

The Poulaphouca reservoir in Wicklow, the area’s largest water supply, is running low at 154 days’ supply compared to the usual 200 days.

The areas affected are Fingal, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, Wicklow, Kildare and Dublin city centre. Dublin City Council manager John Tierney said that the area needs a new supply.

Last month, various areas of Ireland suffered from water shortages including towns in the west of the country and the Aran Islands of Inis Mór and Inis Óirr.

Officials have said that Dublin  needs about 540 million litres of drinking water every day but that the city’s four treatment plants were designed to supply only 518 million litres a day.
