Dublin traffic jams are costing around €350 million a year - Shane Ross

The results could lead to an increase in public transport investment.

TRAFFIC JAMS IN the greater Dublin area is estimated to cost the economy €350 million per year, and could rise to €2 billion per year by 2033.

Transport Minister Shane Ross was asked by Fianna Fáil TD John Lahart for the most recent data available regarding the cost of traffic congestion to the economy.

Ross said that they are currently estimating the cost of “aggravated congestion”, or very severe traffic jams across Ireland’s transport system, but had the above preliminary figures.

The study is using data from a variety of sources to estimate activity on the network, including census travel-to-work data, surveys, car ownership data and the CSO.

“This work is an important consideration in formulating my overall approach to tackling congestion in the short to medium term,” Ross said, before suggesting that the project could lead to more public transport services.

“It forms a key part of the case for increased public transport investment, as part of the mid-term review of the government’s capital plan in 2017.”

Ross said that a final project report will be published on the Department of Transport’s website in the coming weeks.
