Dublin West candidates spent €143,000 on campaigns

Fianna Fáil candidate David McGuinness recorded the highest expenses, according to SIPO.

FIGURES RELEASED today by the Standards in Public Office Commission show that the total expenditure of candidates campaigning for the Dublin West by-election in October 2011 amounted to over €143,000.

The by-election to fill the Dáil seat left vacant by the passing of the late Brian Lenihan Jnr was won by Labour’s Patrick Nulty.

Nulty spent €26,739 on the campaign, while the highest spender was Fianna Fáil’s David McGuinness, with €33,905. Fine Gael’s Eithne Loftus was the second-highest spending candidate (€31,073).

SIPO says that it has found no evidence of campaigns overspending; the limit per candidate was €37,650.

Meanwhile, Socialist Party candidate Ruth Coppinger had the highest level of donations disclosed, at €15,693.

Here is SIPO’s table of the #dubw candidate’s expenses and donations:
