Ever darkened the door of Dun Leary’s Last Corner Shop?

IF YOU’VE EVER visited Dun Laoghaire, then chances are you’ve darkened the door of Dun Leary’s Last Corner Shop, a slightly hectic newsagents and local institution.

It’s known for its ace offers…

For being open very, very late…

duna Yelp Yelp

And for stocking newspapers from all over the country and the world. We mean everything from The Angl0-Celt to Der Spiegel.

Earlier this week, Humans of Dublin shared a photo of Dun Leary’s Last Corner Shop’s owner, John Hyland, who explained why he loved his job.

There are two things I really love; reading newspapers and talking to people. I consider myself a lucky fella I’ve been doing what I love since 1971!

It’s the little things, right?

The photo has received over 2,600 likes. Locals have taken to the comments to pay tribute to Hyland with many describing him as a “legend” and an “institution”.

John Hyland, is a legend, I worked with John for 14 odd years, it paid for my College fees. From my Aunt, Sister, and friends we all worked there when Alex’s was across the road beside the bus stop. It was 24/7 everyone always busy stocking and cleaning, as there was always a steady flow of customers. The motto…no one leaves without a smile on their face. It never ceased to amaze me that with Spar and a corner shop less than 20 meters away, they would be empty and we would be packed. People traveled to goto Alex’s Newsagent, and everyone was known by name….even the boys from Glasthule

Haha I can remember he had the shop in Inchicore back in the 80′s and early 90′s, was the only place around that you could get the computer magazines at the time :)

Wish we had more pride in local shops like this. We’re far too prone to shopping in soulless British and American chains.

Used to love going into this shop and gambling on a chocolate cream or a walnut whip.

Great article but one line says, ‘It’s known for its ace offers.’ I think it would be a much better article if it said, ‘it’s known for its fantastic offers.’
