Sommerville Lodge in Dundrum has outlasted the grand manor it once served.

BACK IN THE day, a gate lodge existed as a home-from-home for staff of manor houses, be they porters or butlers.

As a result, Ireland is full of country estates, big and small, with gate lodges on their grounds. Many of these are large enough to be homes in their own right, but because they sit on private grounds, ownership tends to be restricted.

Sommerville Lodge, however, stands alone. Built in 1870, the one-bedroom, one-bathroom home has actually outlasted the grand manor it once served.

The lodge’s interior is surprisingly creative. Far from your standard neutral tones, there are pops of colour everywhere. The kitchen is duck-egg blue, and features a cosy dining area, shiny chrome appliances and fitted units.

While Sommerville Lodge is small – there are just three rooms in total, spanning 53 sq. m/581 sq. ft – it certainly has buckets of character.

Rustic-looking exposed walls serve as a reminder that this property is over 100 years old, and the bedroom features views to the gardens.

Outside, there’s a private oasis of gardens with a mix of shrubs, trees and a patio area for relaxing. There’s also a shed to the rear, as well as access to the garden from the side of the lodge.
