File on death of schoolboy after being struck by a van being prepared for the DPP, inquest hears

A male in his 20s was arrested in connection with the incident but was later released without charge.

A FILE ON the death of a young Clare schoolboy following a road traffic collision in February this year is being prepared for the DPP, an inquest has heard.

Dylan Coady-Coleman (10) of Corrib Drive, Shannon, Co Clare suffered fatal injuries when he was struck by a van near his home at Purcell Park, Shannon shortly after 2pm on February 25.

The 4th class pupil from St Tola’s National School in Shannon was brought to University Hospital Limerick for treatment before being subsequently transferred to Children’s Health Ireland at Temple Street in Dublin where he passed away three days later.

At the opening of the inquest into his death at Dublin District Coroner’s Court on Tuesday, evidence was heard that the schoolboy was formally pronounced dead at 11.12am on February 28.

Dylan’s father, Garry Coleman described how his son had been taken to hospital following a road traffic accident.

Mr Coleman told the hearing that he and his partner, Laura, made the decision to donate Dylan’s organs for transplant after being informed by hospital staff that there was nothing more that could be done for their son.

He also confirmed that he had formally identified his son’s body to gardaí.

The coroner, Aisling Gannon, informed Dylan’s parents that the results of a postmortem showed he had died as a result of catastrophic head injuries arising from a road traffic collision.

In reply to a question from the family’s solicitor, Caitriona Carmody, the coroner explained how the holding of the full inquest would be dependent on whether any criminal prosecution would arise from Dylan’s death.

Inspector Anthony Collins informed the court that a file on the case was being prepared for the DPP.

He applied for an adjournment of the inquest under the Coroners Act on the basis that criminal proceedings are being considered.

The coroner granted the application and adjourned the case for further mention to June 11, 2025.

The death of the schoolboy was considered particularly tragic as his mother, Laura Coady, gave birth to a baby boy in the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin on the day before her other son died.

The infant who was brought to Dylan’s bedside before he passed away, was christened Shane Dylan, in honour of his late brother.

The couple have one other child – a daughter, Zoe.

A male in his 20s was arrested in connection with the incident but was later released without charge.
