Eamon Gilmore joins 24 companies in Turkey for trade mission

The Enterprise Ireland trip will last four days.

EAMON GILMORE IS accompanying 24 Irish companies to Turkey today for a four-day mission to boost trade between the countries.

The Enterprise Ireland-led trip will take in both Ankara and Istanbul and includes firms in the engineering, education, ICT, telecommunications, life sciences and softwere sectors.

While in the country, the Tánaiste will hold a series of high-level meetings with the Turkish president Abdullah Gül, as well as a number of government ministers.

A host of business meeting with Irish companies and their Turkish partners and customers has also been organised.

According to Gilmore’s department, the visit comes at a “good time” for export firms as the Irish presidency of the EU is helping to progress accession negotiations with Turkey. The candidacy will be discussed with Turkey’s Foreign and European Affairs ministers.

Bilateral trade between Ireland and Turkey was worth more than €1 billion in 2012.

Gilmore has also scheduled a visit to a Syrian refugee camp on the Turkish border.
