'Economiser' tool may cut your motoring costs by 10 per cent

The National Consumer Agency’s new tool aims to educate people on how changing behaviour can save cash.

AN ONLINE TOOL recently upgraded by the National Consumer Agency claims it can help the public save up to 10 per cent on motoring costs – simply by educating drivers on their bad habits.

The Economiser tool asks users to input their weekly fuel usage and other variables, before advising the user on how much money you could be saving – by educating them to more cost-conscious ways of driving.

The tool also hopes to offer practical advice on how to get better value for money for fuel, servicing and other car-running costs – reducing a motorist’s overall spend.

Fergal O’Leary of the National Consumer Agency said the tool did not expect motorists to make profound changes to their lifestyles, but instead tried to make them think about their habits.

“How many people having something large in back seat or boot that they lug around but rarely use?”, he asked. “Take it out and you’re saving money straight away.”

Other examples of increasing fuel economy were keeping tyres inflated at the appropriate pressure, and by deciding to pull away gradually from roundabouts and traffic lights instead of aggressive accelerating.

“They may seem simple but if they’re done consistently, you will save money,” O’Leary assured. “You won’t need to change car or make fewer journeys.”

The Economiser budgeting tool was originally launched 18 months ago, and offers consumers analysis on grocery spending, TV, telecoms and mobile phone offerings, and energy prices.

The NCA says it has seen around 30,000 users since its launch – with many returning to get tips in further sectors after noticing savings from other areas.
