AN AUSTRALIAN EDUCATION Minister has banned schools from screening a documentary about children with gay parents.
On Friday morning the New South Wales Minister, Adrian Piccoli, personally intervened to prevent a Sydney high school from screening the film ‘Gayby Baby’.
Yesterday he issued a memo to the principals of New South Wales ordering them not to show the film during school hours.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports that around 50 schools across Australia, including 20 in New South Wales had organised a simultaneous broadcast of the film as part of a nationwide Wear it Purple day campaign of sexual inclusion in schools.
Piccoli said, “This movie is not part of the curriculum and that’s why I’ve made that direction.
“During school hours we expect them to be doing maths and English and curriculum matters.”
The director of Gayby Baby Maya Newel told Mamamia the ban was just another example of families of same sex couples being “brought to the forefront and shown that we’re worth less and that our families are not welcome in the education system.
All schools should be places where young people have the right to participate in national conversation.
“A family is a family, and it doesn’t matter what the sexuality and gender of our parents are. We should be having a national conversation about how does anyone – straight, gay or otherwise – raise healthy, well-adjusted children.”
