Eight killed as train and mini-bus collide in Poland

Most of the crash victims were seasonal workers from Ukraine.

A COLLISION between a mini-bus and a train on a level crossing killed eight people and left another two injured in Poland on Monday, with a majority of the victims Ukrainian nationals, police said.

“Eight passengers on the bus were killed. Two others were injured,” Joanna Kacka, police spokeswoman in Lodz, central Poland told AFP.

Most of the fatalities were Ukrainian seasonal workers who were commuting to a local food processing factory, she added.

The accident happened at around 6am in the central town of Bratoszewice when the mini-bus failed to stop at the level railway crossing.

Investigators found no skid marks, suggesting there was no sudden attempt to stop the vehicle.

The six-person Ford Transit mini-bus was also overloaded, carrying ten passengers.

About 30 passengers on the commuter train travelling at about 40 km per hour escaped the crash unscathed.
