Elderly woman killed in Co Wexford road accident

The woman in her 60s died at lunchtime and a second woman is in hospital – she is the second road fatality of 2012.

A WOMAN IN her late 60s has been killed after her car went into a ditch in Co Wexford this lunchtime.

The woman was driving the car on the R733 at Haggard, Ramsgrange, New Ross when the accident happened at around 1.30pm today. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another woman, aged in her 70s, was a passenger in the car and has been taken by ambulance to Wexford General Hospital.

Forensic collision investigators have examined the scene and reopened the road this evening but gardai are still looking for people with information on the incident to come forward. They can be contacted at New Ross Garda station at 051 426030 or at the confidential line on 1800 666111.

A 22-year-old man died in a single-vehicle crash at Virginia, Co Cavan at around 2am this morning, the first road fatality of 2012.

The news comes as the Road Safety Authority recorded a drop in overall road deaths in 2011. Such deaths fell to 186 people (from 212 last year), making the figure the lowest ever since data on them began in 1959.
