Taoiseach holds meeting with north-inner city residents over gangland shootings

The Taoiseach, Tánaiste and a number of Ministers attended the meeting to hear from local residents.

THE TAOISEACH AND Tánaiste met with residents and community leaders in the north inner city this evening to hear their views on the recent gangland shootings.

Seven men have been shot dead in the recent gangland war. The latest victim, Garth Hutch, was murdered outside his home on Dublin’s North Cumberland Street.

A number of Ministers attending the private meeting, which heard from local community groups and representatives.

Speaking on his way into the meeting this evening, Enda Kenny told reporters, “We’re here to listen to the views of the community”.

When asked if a task force will be set up based on this meeting, the Taoiseach said:

“Out of this meeting we will listen very carefully to what community leaders have to say, we’ve been dealing with many of these aspects for many years.”

Addressing the question of timing on the task force, Minister for Justice and Equality Frances Fitzgerald said:

I don’t think we’ll put a time frame on it just right now but obviously in the short term you would expect to see action in relation to the issues being identified by the community.

“The important thing is to met with the local community and hear their concerns and then the actions plans that need to be put in place will arise out of that.”

Minister for Expenditure and Reform Paschal Donohoe said:

There are decades of neglect that have gone on and we are seeing the consequences of that in some of the challenges that we are facing.

Dublin City Councillor Christy Burke told reporters that he welcomed the meeting.
