Engaged couples in Turkey are being told not to flirt or hold hands

In many areas, sex before marriage is not only a taboo but simply out of the question.

ENGAGED COUPLES SHOULD refrain from flirting, holding hands and “other behaviours that are not endorsed by Islam,” Turkey’s religious affairs agency declared Monday.

Answering the question “is it appropriate for those who are engaged to be married to be able to see each other?”, the agency, known as Diyanet, set out where the limits lay for those who plan to tie the knot in overwhelmingly Muslim Turkey.

“There is no harm in engaged couples meeting to get to know each other, as long as they follow the rules of privacy,” it said in a statement on its website.

But engaged couples need to refrain from flirting, living together, staying together tete-a-tete in a way that could give rise to gossip, holding hands and other behaviours that are not endorsed by Islam.

While many Turks embrace European lifestyles in Istanbul, the Aegean coast and Ankara, traditional Islamic values and religious conservatism hold sway in much of the country.

In many areas, sex before marriage is not only a taboo but simply out of the question.

Turkey’s religious affairs agency Diyanet was established in 1924 to oversee religion in the modern secular Turkish Republic following the abolition of the Islamic Caliphate in the wake of the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.

One of its duties enshrined in the constitution is to enlighten the public about religious values.

It frequently issues directives on advice about moral behaviour. But in the officially secular state these have no legal weight.

Critics complain that Turkey has seen a creeping Islamisation under the Islamic-rooted rule of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, formerly prime minister, that has undermined the secular principles of the modern state set up by its founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

But the government insists it is merely allowing greater religious freedoms to devout Muslims that had been denied in the past.

Went to rathwood with the kids a few years ago after hearing all the hype about it. Have to say it was alright nothing spectacular. Art and crafts for the kids at the start then a train ride then a walk to Santa,a few sparse lights and a guy in an elf suit and some singing. Nothing to write home about wondered what all the fuss was about.

You’re looking at it from an adult’s perspective. I doubt the point is to entertain you. A trip away, arts and crafts, a train ride, lights, music, elves and a visit to Santa. If you’re under the age of 8 that can be a pretty wicked day out, no!?

If you think it’s too early to mention Christmas – which it seems you do – then why publish an article about it?

Maybe I’ve missed something, but is there any reason why the “is” is missing out of the word Christmas?

Ah right, I suppose it makes sense as to not upset anyone. I’m old school so I was always taught to say Christmas instead of Xmas… Well Merry Christmas/chri**mas to you all.

It’s August! Christmas isn’t until December, many businesses out there would do well to remember that!

Do you not get fed up looking at them? I usually put them up about 2 weeks before and can’t wait to take them down so I can scrub the place.

I haven’t even had my “summer holiday” yet and people are talking about Christmas?
