No resolution in sight as ESB workers serve strike notice

There has been no third-party intervention mooted at this stage of the dispute.

ESB WORKERS WILL serve strike notice on their employers today as discussions with management failed yesterday.

The talks between management and unions ended in a war of words, rather than with an agreement.

Industrial action is now due to begin on 16 December. Although the terms of the action are not yet known, customers have been told to expect power outages as a result.

The dispute centres on a €1.6 billion deficit in the ESB’s pension scheme. Workers believe that the ESB has breached a 2010 agreement.

Following the conclusion of talks yesterday, both Unite and ESB management said significant differences remained between the parties but they were determined to continue to engage in dialogue.

Unite has said it will serve the industrial action notice at 2pm today.

No third party intervention – such as the Labour Relations Commission – has been planned as yet.
