Watch the moment that an escalator reversed and caused a huge pile up

The incident happened in Ningbo, a city in China’s Zhejiang province

escalator reverse

COMMUTING CAN BE tricky at the best of times.

Spare a thought for the people who ran afoul of this defective escalator in Ningbo, a city in China’s Zhejiang province.

Last Thursday it suddenly reversed, throwing those standing on it back towards the bottom.

Local media are reporting that a total of 10 people were taken to hospital, with five being declared injured.

An investigation into what exactly caused the escalator to switch direction is underway.

This isn’t the first incident concerning escalator safety in China.

Last October a four-year-old boy was killed in the Chinese city of Chongqing after becoming stuck under an escalator handrail.
