IF YOU’VE CONSIDERED the Garden of Ireland when it comes to putting down roots, no doubt you’ve cast a wide net to see exactly what’s out there.

And while Co Wicklow is indeed seeing its fair share of new developments lately, anyone looking for a home with a bit more of a backstory won’t be disappointed

Edendale is a magnificent estate that comprises not one but two homes – an old presbytery and gate lodge that date to about 1886 and 1838 respectively.

Edendale, which is the main house, has kept many original features including stained glass, ceiling cornices and an elegant staircase.

The house comprises three bedrooms and three bathrooms. The interior is welcoming and thoughtfully laid out with the front of the home featuring three reception rooms. These spaces offer superb views of the landscaped gardens and the surrounding countryside with glimpses of the coastline, too.

A drawing room on the ground floor has French doors that lead to the garden, which makes it easy to step out for a morning coffee or an evening glass of wine.  Period features like the high ceilings, original cornices, classic fireplaces and sash windows contribute to the Georgian charm of this home.

The kitchen and breakfast area capture the sunrise in the east wing and include a walk-in pantry and even a pizza oven.

Adjacent to Edendale, you’ll discover a spacious garage with upper-level storage, offering endless potential.

On the ground floor, you’ll also find a bedroom with access to a sitting room, a garden library and a bathroom. The utility area offers ample storage, a wine cellar, and the main ground floor bathroom. Upstairs, two more bedrooms and a bathroom await, providing plenty of space for a family or guests.

Eden Lodge is a separate house on the property, and it’s perfect for visitors. It could even be rented out. With its own entrance and parking space, the Lodge features a spacious open plan kitchen and dining area that leads to a separate sitting room. The two bedrooms, located on the upper level have a bathroom each.

For equestrian types, the estate includes two stables near a paddock and there is also a scenic walking trail lined with lime trees.

As this is a house in Wicklow, it makes perfect sense that the garden is a main focus. The sunny terraces around the house are richly planted with shrubs, while the barbecue area provides an ideal space for outdoor entertaining. The garden’s south facing aspect, shelter, and proximity to the sea ensure a mild climate for plants like rhododendron, magnolia and camellia.

In spring, the garden is full to the brim with colour as there are over 50 varieties of daffodils and snowdrops. Autumn also brings its fair share of colour thanks to mature Japanese maples. A wide variety of berries, while apples, mulberries and filberts also thrive in the orchard.
