6 animal-tastic family events happening this weekend, from pony rides to real-life snakes

Here’s what’s on for mini nature lovers this week and weekend.

KILDARE

Pony riding at the National Stud: There will be all kinds of fun to be had this Sunday at the National Stud, with free pony rides along with face-painting and a fun and interactive mobile farm for all the family to enjoy and learn.

DUBLIN

Enchanted Garden Jungle Show: Take a break from back-to-school shopping by checking out some reptiles, spiders and snakes in Dublin’s Jervis Centre this Saturday. Be sure to bring a camera.

Suits: All ages (but we’d recommend 3+). When: Saturday Aug 25th at 1.30, 2.30 and 3.30pm. Costs: Free. Find out more here.

Fernhill Adventure for Heritage Week: Roam through the unique farmland meadows around Dublin’s Fernhill House and Estate to discover the wildlife that lives there. There’ll be nets, bug jars and animal tracking sheets to help document what you find.

Budding Botanist Workshop: Learn how to become a dried plant collector at the Botanic Gardens this Thursday. You’ll roam through the garden, meeting creepy crawlies and collecting plant leaves to press – before making your very own flower press.

Suits: 6+. When: Thursday 23rd at 11am. Costs: Free, but email botanicgardens@opw.ie to book. Find out more here.

WATERFORD

Take a very special train trip: Enjoy a teddy bear’s picnic and meet some of the Mayfield Birds of Prey before (or after) hopping aboard a steam train at the Waterford & Suir Valley railway this Sunday. There’ll be face painters and plenty of family entertainment.

Suits: The whole family. When: Sunday August 26th 11am-4pm. Costs: Family train tickets €20, under 2s go free. Find out more here.

GALWAY

Meet Fergus the alpaca: Head to the Slieve Aughty Centre from 12 – 6pm daily for an animal-filled family experience. Meet friendly animals including Fergus the alpaca and Eileen the pot-bellied pig, plus visit the nearby Enchanted Forest, explore the self-guided nature trail and try some arts and crafts.
