Pimp My Ride was faked - but the contestants were generally ok with it

Sorry.

REMEMBER MTV’S PIMP My Ride?

Allow us to refresh your memory. The MTV reality show followed rapper Xzibit as he “pimped” up old bangers belonging to teenagers and upgraded them with loads of fancy new features, including TV screens.

It was class.

Except now it appears that the whole thing was as real as Bosco.

The Huffington Post has spoken with a number of former contestants, who have stepped forward and detailed their experiences on the show. Spoiler alert: it’s grim.

Apparently certain features were only fitted into the car for the taping and were then swiftly removed. This was confirmed to The Huffington Post by the show’s producer Larry Hochberg, who said that it was for safety reasons.

Additionally, some features were fitted just straight up never worked.

For example, a robotic arm installed into Seth Martino’s car was, as he put it, actually solely “controlled by commands that were entered into a laptop by the spiky haired guy off screen.” In reality, it “was just a robotic arm with a bunch of wires hanging out of it.”

Also? The shots of contestants looking excited were all staged, while the mechanic work was pretty dubious.

MTV also invented phony back stories for certain contestants — they encouraged one contestant to dump his girlfriend, so they could turn him into a “playa”.

The good news, though? Xzibit is apparently really sound.
